PONTEFRACT IN 1942

24th April 1942
A.T.C. Week Success

The Welfare Fund Week arranged by the Pontefract Squadron of the Air Training Corps, which closed on Sunday, realised nearly £ 400 - a sum which has gratified everyone. It will go towards the cost of furnishing the new social headquarters in Southgate. In addition to the events reported last week, dances were held at the Town Hall, Knottingley, at the Crescent Ballroom, Pontefract, yesterday week, and at the Town Hall, Pontefract, on Friday, and all were well attended and successful. The Thursday effort was a request dance, organised by the Commanding Officer of the Squadron, Flt. Lieut. W. Bentley, and the others were arranged by Councillor J. Blackburn. The Mayor of Pontefract attended the last.

On Saturday a flag day in Pontefract realised the excellent sum of £63. The week closed with a film show at the Crescent Cinema, arranged by the management; and again there was a large attendance. During an interval in the programme, Flight-Lieut Bentley thanked the public for their help in the week's efforts, and expressed appreciation of the assistance given by the directors and management of the Alexandra and Crescent Cinema's.
