PONTEFRACT IN 1942

7th August 1942
Railings To Go

Pontefract is shortly to suffer the removal of any unnecessary iron railings, posts and chains, and similar decorations, as a contribution to the provision of metal for guns and other war materials.

Prisoner Of War

Mrs F. Lawson, who lives with her father, Mr. A. Killingbeck, at Baghill View, Pontefract, has received the welcome news that her husband Sapper F. Lawson, who was reported missing in the Middle East since June 5th, is now a P.O.W. in Italy. Before he joined the forces in June 1940, he was employed by the late Mr. R.K. Poskitt, of Beal. He belongs to a well-known Whitley family.

In Italian Hands

Mrs M. Clegg, of Box Lane, Pontefract, has received notification that her husband Lance Corporal Douglas Clegg of the East Yorkshire Regiment, who was posted missing on June 4th, is known to be a P.O.W. in Italian hands. Before joining the forces 2 ½ years ago, Lance Cpl Clegg, who is 24 years old, was a clerk on the L.M.S. Railway, and a member of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade. He has a 10-month-old daughter he has not seen. His father is also in the Forces.
