PONTEFRACT IN 1942

16th October 1942
A Singing Competition

A singing competition held at the Willow Park Social Club, Pontefract, on Sunday, and organised by the Club Committee, attracted 30 entries. The efforts were judged by the pianist, Mr. A. Watson. The winners were Messrs. Hudson, Grainger and Callear and Miss Nickling.

Drowned at Sea

Official notification has now been received by his parents that Acting Leading Seaman R. Boardman, of Pontefract, who was reported to be missing in The Express on September 25th, lost his life by drowning while attempting to land a lifeboat near Freetown, Sierra Leone. His ship had been torpedoed and sunk.

With The Airmen

Announcements have been made recently that men and women over the customary military ages can be very useful in the R.A.F. and the W.A.A.F. To help volunteers for such work, interviews with officers of the two services may be obtained in Pontefract on Tuesday, in accordance with details in an advertisement in this issue.

Tank Effort Brings Reward

Pontefract’s ‘Tanks for Attack’ effort, which realised nearly £55,000 in small savings in 10 weeks, has not been in vain, though it failed to achieve the desired 20 percent increase on the figures during the corresponding period of 1941.
