The
Citizens Advice Bureau at Pontefract has dealt with 468 problems during
the past year. The Bureau provides a free service of advice and
information, available to all citizens, of any age, class, sex, race or
creed. Its purpose is to offer skilled help in the many complications of
modern life and since June, 1940, it has sent 200 messages to people in
enemy occupied territory, and received 105 replies. The bureau is
staffed entirely by volunteers. It serves the community, and in its own
turn it requires help, either financially or with the work of the
Bureau.
Shop
Closing
In
pursuance of the decision of the Pontefract Town Council, as reported in
‘The Express’ last week, the War Executive Committee of the
Pontefract and District Chamber of Trade points out that from Sunday
November 1st, to Saturday, March 6th 1943, shops may remain open until
7.00pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 6.00.pm on other days, except
Thursdays. [half day closing]
At
the same time, some tradesmen have decided to close earlier owing to the
urgent need for fuel economy. The Executive warmly approves of the
decision for non-food shops for the darkest period of the year, as it
will make a welcome contribution to the saving of light and heat.
