PONTEFRACT IN 1944

January 1944
AWARDED THE D.F.C

It is announced that Flying Officer Walter Rowley, whose home is stated to be at Pontefract, has been awarded the D.F.C. He has taken part in many operational sorties, covering targets at Rostock, Hamburg, Southern Germany and Italy. On one occasion last August, stated the citation, his aircraft was seriously damaged by a hostile fighter when over Nuremburg. By skilful navigation F.O. Rowley enabled his captain to fly the badly damaged bomber back to England.
