ANOTHER SALUTE
Mention
was made in 'The Express' last week of a B.B.C. 'Salute' to the Yorks
and Lancaster Regiment. Another salute to the regiment was decided upon
in Pontefract yesterday week, arising from the ''Salute the Soldier''
campaign for war savings, which is to be held in the town in the second
week of July in view of the traditional associations of the Regiment
with the town, and in appreciation of the help it has given to local war
efforts in the past three years. The Pontefract Savings Committee in its
War Weapons week in 1941, its Warship Week in 1942, and its Wings For
Victory Week last year, has raised over £800,000; and the Committee
agreed that its 'Salute to the Soldier' must bring the monetary
contributions to the war effort to one million pounds. The sum needed
for that purpose is £163,737. Of that sum, £125,000 will be earmarked
for the Yorks and Lancs Regiment and the balance, plus anticipated
surplus over the target figure, will equip a parachute battalion. The
Committee welcomed a letter from the A.T.S. wishing success to the Week
and offering its help in it.
