SWIMMING GALA
A
committee of the Pontefract Air Raid Warden's Service, consisting of
Messrs L.D. Rose, (Chairman), J. Wakefield (Treasurer), A. Hawley, J.G.
Dudley and W.H. Fellows, organised a swimming gala in aid of the
Pontefract Comforts Fund for the Merchant Navy which was held in the
Pontefract Baths on Wednesday. The gala was opened by the Mayor of
Pontefract, Councillor F.W. Lane, and a large crowd watched 16 events; a
water polo match between a R.A.F. team and the Chief Warden's team,
which the latter won; an exhibition by Miss Doris Storey, holder of the
200 yards breast stroke record who has represented England in Australia,
and in the last Olympic Games in Germany. The prizes were
presented by Capt C.C.B. Vacher, D.S.O., R.N. The starter and referee
for polo, was Alderman G. Wright, J.P. Mr. F.R.C. Archer and Mr.
W. Colley judged the diving, and the swimming was judged by Deputy Head
Warden's.
