PONTEFRACT IN 1945
16th
February 1945
PONTEFRACT PRIVATE WITH THE
DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY
In
a recent exciting night attack on a Dutch village held by a German
paratroop battalion, Private J. Onions, of Monkhill Drive, Pontefract,
was one of the survivors of the leading company of Durham Light Infantry
which led the attack. His platoon was heavily outnumbered, cut off, and
their position desperate, but they fought on and paved the way for the
advance of a division. In an interview with a war correspondent, in
which the incident was fully described, Private Onions said, "there
were thrills and to spare."
