PONTEFRACT IN 1945

16th March 1945
PONTEFRACT MAN IN NAVAL SECRET

A Pontefract man played a part in what has been described as one of Britain's most closely guarded naval secrets - the launching by the Queen, some time ago, of the giant aircraft carrier, H.M.S. Implacable.

The launching was disclosed only on Saturday and since it occurred, the vessel has taken part in several operations against the enemy, including an attack on the German battleship, Admiral von Tirpitz. It was aircraft flown from the Implacable that located the Tirpitz in Tromso Fiord.

The Pontefract man is Sub-Lieutenant D.R. Blackburn, who is a member of the crew of the carrier. Lieutenant Blackburn is the third son of Mr. F. Blackburn of Ropergate, Pontefract. He worked for the Refuge Assurance Company for about seven years before joining the Navy two years ago. He was a member of the Pontefract Liberal Club, and took a keen interest in golf and cricket.
