After
he was badly wounded at El Alamain in 1942, Ronald Horbury, of Waterloo
Avenue. Pontefract, spent six or seven years in hospitals. Back home for
18 months, he has been able to go out only in an invalid chair. Now,
however, he has his own 8hp car, the gift of the Ministry of Pensions.
It was delivered to him at his home, on Tuesday, by the Chief Officer of
the Ministry for the North-Eastern Region, Mr. J.Shires, and has special
devices which take the place of foot pedals, and a collapsible chair.
From the ministry he will receive £50 a year towards the cost of
maintenance, and the AA. and RAC will give him help if required on the
road. The Minister of Pensions, Mr. H.A. Marquand, has sent a letter to
him which reads
"I
hope that this car will be the means of giving you enjoyment, and will
make your life, in spite of your disablement, a bit easier for
you."
Mr.
Horbury was a pony driver at the Prince of Wales Colliery, Pontefract,
until he joined the Royal Artillery a fortnight before the last war
broke out. He is a bachelor, and his disability prevents him from
following any occupation.
