PONTEFRACT IN 1953

PONTEFRACT CORONATION WEEK

Sunday 31st May at 10.45am: Civic Service, Parish Church.

Monday 1st June, 6.30pm. - 8.30pm: Distribution of gift parcels to old people, and Coronation Beakers to children not attending school.

CORONATION DAY

2pm: Planting of Coronation oak tree by the Mayor, Councillor J.E. Morrell in the Valley Gardens.

2.30pm and every hour until 8.30: Punch and Judy show, ventriloquism, humorous magic - Pontefract Park.

Dancing displays at 2.30 - Pontefract Park.

3pm: Water Sports, swimming and comic events, boat racing - Park Lake. Motorcycle gymkhana.

3.30pm: Physical training display.

4 0.pm: Tea, school children.

5.15pm: Children’s sports.

7pm: Dancing displays, band selections.

10pm: Bonfire, fireworks display, Park Hill, [if wet on the following evening]

10.45pm: to 2am: Open-air dancing in the Market place.

At intervals during the day, the bells will be rung at the Parish Church and All Saint’s Church.

Wednesday 3rd June at 7pm: Old people’s concert - Assembly Rooms.

Thursday 4th June at 6.30pm: Folk dancing in the Castle grounds.
