Circumstances
combined to make Remembrance Sunday at Pontefract one of the most moving
ever observed in the town. After heavy continuous rain the sun shone
warmly from an almost cloudless sky and there was a breeze sufficient
only to unfurl the parade banners. The observance coincided with the
first visit to the town of the new Bishop of Pontefract, the Right
Reverend G.W. Clarkson, and the impressive service in the Parish Church
was enhanced by the music of the York and Lancaster Regiment.
Outside
the church and at the War Memorial, the crowds were larger than in
previous years, and inside the church many people stood throughout the
service. The band conducted by Bandmaster G. Young led the customary
civic parade from the Town Hall, and in it were the Mayor, Alderman W.
Wryder J.P., members and officials of the Town Council, and the M.P. for
Pontefract, Mr. G.O. Sylvester. During the singing of the opening hymn,
the new Bishop entered the church and was greeted at the foot of the
chancel by the Mayor and the Vicar, the Reverend J. Peel. He
acknowledged their greetings before moving on to his throne, while the
band played a fanfare.
After
the Vicar had read Binyon’s lines "They shall not grow
old...." the two minutes silence was observed followed by the
sounding of the ‘Last Post’ and Reveille by a bugler. And
Remembrance Day was also observed at the Micklegate Methodist Church,
where the preacher in the morning was Mr. H. Heptinstall of Ackworth,
and the Circuit Superintendent Minister, the Reverend A.H. Beardsley, in
the evening.
