CHRISTMAS SOCIAL
A
Christmas Social was held in the Pontefract Congregational Church School
on Saturday, with Messrs. D. Tubbs and Beaumont in charge of the
festivities. Refreshments were served by the ladies of the church.
Cricketers
Dance
A
dance held at Wordsworth Cafe, Pontefract, on Friday for the funds of
the Pontefract Cricket Club, organised by Messrs. B. Hall and B. Crofts,
attracted a large gathering and was a financial and social success. A
programme of mixed dances was enjoyed and spot prizes were won.
Christmas
Party
The
Christmas party of the Pontefract Women’s Social Services Centre was
held at Wordsworth’s Cafe, Pontefract, on Tuesday. Among the guests
were the Mayor and Mayoress of Pontefract, Alderman W. Wryder, P.P. and
Mrs. Wryder.
Carol
Service
The
pupils of the County Secondary School, Pontefract, held their second
annual carol service in the Pontefract Parish Church on Thursday, amid a
large gathering including parents and governors of the school. The
service was conducted by the Vicar, the Reverend J. Peel, who gave an
address. Carols were interspersed with Bible readings by the prefects,
the Captain of the school, David Goodwin, and the Headmaster of the
school, Mr. F.W. Bowen.
Regimental
Ball
About
200 guests attended the first post-war regimental ball of the 496th
Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the Royal Artillery [Territorial
Association] in the Assembly Rooms, Pontefract, on Wednesday. The
regiment was formed in 1938 from the K.O.Y.L.I., the Leeds Rifles, and
the Royal Artillery, and has batteries in Pontefract, Castleford and
Woodlesford. The cartridge case of the first 3.7 shell fired after
formation of the regiment, burnished and mounted, was on display at the
function with other regimental silver belonging to the units. Many
senior officers and council members attended.
