29th April 1955
Telegram to Queen

A telegram of good wishes to the Queen on her 29th birthday, on Friday, was sent by the Mayor of Pontefract Alderman W Ryder. J.P., on behalf of the Borough, and was acknowledged by the Queen’s Private Secretary.

Sunday Treat

Over 120 pupils of the Central Methodist Sunday school, Pontefract, enjoyed a treat on Saturday, organised by the school Superintendent, Mr. S. Jones, and teachers. Games for the primary school pupil’s was followed by tea, which was supplied by members, after which cartoons and educational films were shown.

Sea Rescue

News has been received at his home, in Alden Crescent, Pontefract, that earlier this month 18-year-old Ordinary Seaman John Canning, with two other men, rescued a 13-year-old girl who fainted and fell into the sea, near the Prince George Wharf, Nassau. Canning and a comrade dived nearly twenty feet into the water from the bow of the ‘Bigbury Bay’ on which they were at work. A Nassau civilian also went in, and the rescue was safely over in a few minutes. Canning, who was formerly a pupil at the King’s School, Pontefract, joined the Navy aged 15 and has served aboard ‘H.M.S. Ganges’, ‘Implacable’ and ‘Bigbury Bay’. His ship formed part of the escort of Princess Margaret on her recent tour in the East.
