Sea Rescue
News
has been received at his home, in Alden Crescent, Pontefract, that
earlier this month 18-year-old Ordinary Seaman John Canning, with two
other men, rescued a 13-year-old girl who fainted and fell into the sea,
near the Prince George Wharf, Nassau. Canning and a comrade dived nearly
twenty feet into the water from the bow of the ‘Bigbury Bay’ on
which they were at work. A Nassau civilian also went in, and the rescue
was safely over in a few minutes. Canning, who was formerly a pupil at
the King’s School, Pontefract, joined the Navy aged 15 and has served
aboard ‘H.M.S. Ganges’, ‘Implacable’ and ‘Bigbury Bay’. His
ship formed part of the escort of Princess Margaret on her recent tour
in the East.
