Visit by Young Germans Was a Success
After
a fortnight reciprocal visit, in which they have been guests of members
of the Pontefract Area Youth Committee, a mixed Westphalian sports party
of young people left Wakefield for London on Sunday, and Monday night
began their voyage home to Germany. The Area Youth Officer, Mr. J.
Corbin, who travelled with the visitors to London, described the visit
as successful as last years initial venture, and commended the
hospitality of the Pontefract Area’s hosts. Yesterday week, the German
party resumed their programme with a visit to the liquorice works of
Messr’s Ewbanks at Pontefract, where they were received on behalf of
the directors, by Mr. A.D. Smith. Many of the visitors expressed
surprise at the amount of work still done by hand.
The
weather interfered with a days outing to Harrogate and Knaresborough on
Friday, and denied the visitors the pleasure of boating. Back at the
Lister Baths, Featherstone, in the evening there was a farewell ‘social’
at which Mr. E. Turton senior, presented a shield to the visitors, on
behalf of the Featherstone club.
