THE KING'S SCHOOL FOOTBALL CLUB
The season commenced with
a game against the Masters and Rest. The school was represented by the
following team: O.S. Barton; A.F. Wagner and H. Swann; J. Firth, E.
Blueman (captain), and E.J. Fisher, R.M. Tate, M.G. Croft, R.S. Hill,
E.J. Gledhill and C.A. Horwell.
From the kick off the
Masters attacked strongly and were not long in opening the scoring, Mr.
Ellis headed in from a pass from Mr. Spry. Horwell equalised but
immediately afterwards Mr. Hudson scored a fine goal. Half-time, Masters
2, School 1. On the resumption the School attacked and Gledhill scored.
Blueman gave the School the lead, Crabtree equalised, but Tate placed
the school ahead by a very fine shot. Result: School 4, Masters 3.
Saturday September 30th.
The School played Barnsley 1st XI. at home, 2nd XI. away. The changes
were J. Firth at left back, H. Swann taking up centre-forward, whilst R.
Booth came into the team at right-half. In the first minute a melee
occurred in the Barnsley goalmouth and Swann scored. The Barnsley
combination was too good for the school. L. Wilford took the place of
R.M. Tate on the right wing, doing very well. Barnsley throughout had
most of the play, and when the whistle blew they had six goals to their
credit. Blueman played a very fine game and saved his team from too
heavy a defeat. Result: 1st team lost 6-1; 2nd team lost 4-0.
Wednesday October 11th.
The School played the Barracks away. Mr. Hudson, Mr. McKee, Mr. Spry and
Mr. Crampton played in the School team. At first the school held their
own, but the Barracks soon showed their superiority. Mr. Hudson gave a
great display in goal, and one wondered how he managed to save some of
the shots. The school backs were rather weak and did not combine. Mr.
Crampton scored the only goal for the School in the second-half. Result:
Lost - School 1, Barracks 8.
Wednesday October 18th. The School played Drax Grammar School away. The School
commenced the game with ten men, and it was not until the second-half
that they obtained a substitute. Blueman took up the left-back position,
Booth playing centre-half and Wagner centre-forward. After several
attacks from the School, Drax rallied and scored an easy goal. Shortly
afterwards, a long shot from the wing beat Barton, who was baffled by
the high bounce of the ball. In the second-half the School again took up
the attack and Wagner, with a terrific shot, found the net. Drax then,
from a breakaway, scored a goal which was greatly disputed as not having
crossed the line. The School then scored from a very good shot by Tate.
Towards the end, however, the Drax forwards, taking opportunity of a
miss-kick, again scored. The defence played a good game and were
somewhat handicapped by a missing half-back. Result: Lost School 2,
Drax 4.
CRITICISM:
Blueman E., the
Captain The mainstay of the team who never fails in an emergency.
The one who can play football and has very much to do.
Hill R.S., the Vice
Captain Is very energetic and adapts himself to different
positions well. Must learn to shoot harder and quicker.
Fisher E.J. - Very
keen player, especially at left-half, but must learn to tackle more
quickly and cleaner.
Barton O.S. The
goal-keeper who is improving greatly, and knows his work well. Has
difficulty with high shots but has a strong punch and will soon overcome
this.
Firth J. Plays a
good game at times and is fairly safe at back. Clears well but does not
tackle as he should do.
Booth R. Has
improved much from last seasons form. A steady worker who combines well
and is a good tackler but is erratic in his shooting.
Tate R.M. The
outside-right who is very often shamefully neglected. Receives very
little support but is a good trier, and can be relied upon to a great
extent.
Greenfield A.
The centre-forward who does not go all out as he should do. Has a bad
fault of waiting for the ball in an offside position but is very
dangerous in front of goal.
Swann H. Has
settled down to the inside-right position. Slow at times but dribbles
well and has a hefty punch. Needs plenty of shooting practice.
Horwell C.A. The
inside-left. Is a boy who needs plenty of time. Has a fine, strong shot,
but is very slow and could do better.
Gledhill E.I.
The outside-left. Is an untiring worker, always doing his best. He has a
tendency to hang on to the ball too long but holds his position well.
Wagner A.F. Has
played in many positions. He is easily flurried but can clear well. His
tackling is weak but has done very well, considering his many changes.
