MONKHILL RAILWAY STATION
ADDED 10 APRIL 2006
In
response to Mrs Briggs letter in the April edition of The Digest
regarding the photograph of her father-in-law receiving a certificate
for 46 years employment on the railway. I am pretty sure that
the Mayor in the photograph was my uncle George Poppleton, who by
coincidence was featured on page 18 in the Years in Focus section 1957
on his acception to become the next mayor of Pontefract. I was only
eight at the time but remember the great excitement in our house when
my parents were invited to the Mayors Ball and mum had to buy a posh
dress to wear. They obviously weren't used to such occasions and she
agonised over buying something suitable.

I take this opportunity to say how much I enjoy reading The Digest, my
Dad would have been your biggest fan. He loved nothing better than to
talk about how Pontefract had been in his youth and had a wealth of
knowledge about local history.
