East of Pontefract
Monkhill
From
the same location as the previous picture but looking the other way is
this busy scene. This is a mid-morning picture showing the
Brighouse-Goole goods drawing to a stand at Pontefract East where it was
booked to stop for shunting purposes. This was normally a working for a
Hull-based W.D. locomotive at the time and on this occasion was No
90272. On the right an ex LMS Class 8F No 48721 has brought in coal from
a colliery along the Methley branch and is waiting to shunt. Lurking in
the background behind the line of wagons is another locomotive – a
former LNER Class 04/8, which was the Pontefract shunting pilot for the
day. Photograph copyright © Peter Cookson |
