This view was taken from in front of Pontefract West signal box looking back towards the station. A heavy coal train heads west from the goods loop behind the down platform. The locomotive is a War Department 2-8-0 (No 90370) which became commonplace in the 1950’s and is probably heading for Crofton Hall sidings. On the left the local pilot engine No 46415 is bringing coal from the Prince of Wales Colliery and is waiting for clearance. There were still many thousands of wooden-bodied coal wagons in use at the time and some with the names of private collieries still visible: the one on the left shows the name of Ocean Colliery (Glamorgan).
