<previous image The Methley Branch next image> Further down the line just beneath the overhead conveyor, as gangers are working on the line, an empty wagon train approaches from the Glasshoughton direction. This particular train was known as ‘The Geordie’ as it started from Gascoigne Wood marshalling yard on the North Eastern Railway and worked to Sharlston on the L&Y line; a reversal being necessary at Monkhill. It is interesting to note that it passed six collieries en route: Fryston, Wheldale, Glasshoughton, Prince of Wales, Acton Hall and Snydale. The locomotive was provided by Selby shed and was almost always a class Q6 0-8-0 from about 1951 and before that Q5’s were common. ♠ Photo Peter Cookson. Peter
