There was also a north-western exit from the Prince of Wales colliery near the present ‘Parkside Inn’, and it is at this point that I photographed the 1pm Knottingley-Leeds train behind Ivatt Class 4 No 43070. It is seen passing an LNER B1 4-6-0, waiting to follow with a Prince of Wales to Ardsley coal train which would travel by the Methley Joint Line. Of note is the absence of a buffer stop on the head-shunt for the colliery and also the notice of a catch-point on the left. Catch-points were a safety device placed on a line of rising gradient. They were sprung in such a way as to prevent accidents which might result from a broken coupling causing break-away wagons to run backwards and collide with a following train. ♠ Photo Peter Cooson
