The final picture in this tour of the lines in Pontefract is at the western extremity of the goods yard, not far from the summit of the line between Tanshelf and Featherstone. The subject is a twelve-coach Leeds (Central)-Kings Cross working diverted via Pontefract and Knottingley on a Sunday. The train is coasting down-grade behind an ex LNER Class V2 2-6-2 No 60865 and the fireman appears to be working quite hard at this particular moment. The furthest two tracks are the running lines and there were formerly three sidings of which two remained at this time. The area between the running lines and the small retaining wall on the left has been suggested as the route for part of a Pontefract Western Relief Road but has been much criticised because of problems that would be encountered at the A639 junction.  Photo Peter Cookson.
