Pontefract From Bag Hill

By good fortune there are several Edwardian views in existence in which the station is either the subject of the picture or incidental foreground to a general view of the town taken from the vantage point of Baghill rocks. This excellent Valentine’s view is entitled ‘Pontefract from Bag Hill’. The station layout consisted of five platforms of which four can be seen in this view. The two bay (i.e dead-end) platforms comprised the terminus of the branch from Pontefract Monkhill (bottom right). There were up and down through platforms (bottom centre) and a further south-facing bay platform out of sight to the left. This picture shows clearly the built up station approach road and the cattle market to the left. Peter Cookson.
