Passing over Grovetown Bridge

Pontefract Steam in the Snow

The through Newcastle to Cardiff express left Pontefract over the years at about 10.30am and is the subject of this view. The tenth coach of this eleven coach train is just passing over Grovetown bridge. The Mission Hut, referred to in a letter on Grovetown which featured in issue 22 of the Pontefract Digest magazine, can be seen at the right hand edge of the photograph. Behind the hut a side-lined goods train can just be made out waiting for the road after the passing of the Cardiff train and the York - Bournemouth express which followed at 10.56. The locomotive is an L.N.E.R. Class V2 2-6-2 No. 60961. Although it was normal practice to move locomotives around to different depots as traffic demands required, this was one of only four to spend the whole of its working life of 23 years at the same shed (York).  Peter Cookson.
