COUNCIL TO IMPROVE HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
Wakefield
Council's Healthy Transport team has launched two healthy event programmes
for the summer.
"Summer
Cycling" and "Walk Through 2006" have been set up to help
create awareness of sustainable transport and encourage healthy lifestyles.
"Summer
Cycling" will take place over five months with sessions lasting one
hour, cycling distances of between five and ten miles. The events will take
place across the district. There are a limited number of bicycles available
to borrow if people don't have their own.
"Walk
Through 2006" is encouraging people to walk for at least thirty minutes
a day. The walking events will take place from the beginning of May to the
end of December, and include cancer relief sponsored walks and a family
activity day during August.
Amy
Sharp, of the Healthy Transport team, said she hoped the events will be even
more successful than last year. The programme is much bigger and includes a
greater variety of events to appeal to everyone.
She
added: "People today have become more conscious about global warming
and looking at ways to cut pollution. Many young children and teenagers are
set to take part in the events as growing worries over health are reported.
Hopefully the events will produce a healthy happier district."
A
full list of both programmes is available from the Healthy Transport website link
on the right hand side or by contacting the team on 01924 306691.
