FOR VOTER
From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
A
Castleford High School pupil is now the proud owner of an iPod thanks to his
involvement in the UK Youth Parliament.
Lee
Wilkinson, aged 14, was randomly selected out of the thousands of voters in
this year's elections to win the prize.
Voting
took place in February and March to elect two Members of Youth Parliament
and their deputies.
There
was a more than six per cent rise on last year's vote in the biggest turnout
at the youth polls in the District.
Queen
Elizabeth Grammar School pupil Animish Sivaramakrishnan and Ossett school
pupil Bethany Levick were the successful candidates with 1,522 votes and
1,418 votes respectively. They will help the District's young people have a
bigger say in decision making.
11,354
11 to 18-year-olds turned out to vote out of a possible 26,000 eligible
voters.
Jessica
Mason and Benjamin Hitch will act as this year's deputies.
Voters
had the choice to vote by ballot, text or internet this year resulting in a
year on year improvement of turnout.
