WAKEFIELD COUNCIL
MOST IMPROVED COUNCIL: OFFICIAL
From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
Wakefield
is officially the country's most improved council after winning a national
award.
The
judges in the prestigious Local Government Chronicle Awards gave Wakefield
the honour - the local government equivalent of an Oscar - in the
competition to find the nation's most improved local authority.
It
follows three years of rapid change which has seen Wakefield rise through
the government's league tables.
Council
Leader Councillor Peter Box, who received the award at the ceremony in
London with Chief Executive John Foster, said: "I am delighted with
this award. It has come after a lot of hard work by the political
leadership, the corporate management team and our employees, and it shows
that citizens in Wakefield are getting the levels of service they deserve.
To achieve this result, we had to demonstrate to visiting judges that the
improvements we claimed we had made are actually being delivered. We are
determined to continue improving our services for the benefit of the people
of Wakefield District."
Chief
Executive John Foster said winning an LGC Award raised Wakefield's profile.
It is tremendous news for the District because it is recognition from our
peers for what has been achieved by everybody working together."
He
added: "Being shortlisted for the second year running was a great
achievement in itself and to go one better than last year to win the award
is fantastic. It demonstrates that our improvement was not built on quick
and easy wins, but sustainable improvements to give the citizens of the
District the levels of service they expect and deserve."
Other
councils included in the final shortlist for Most Improved Council were
Calderdale, Coventry, Islington, Walsall and Watford.
Wakefield's
Procurement team were also highly commended by the LGC judges in the
Procurement Team of the Year.
