PROPOSALS FOR FORMER COLLIERY
24 JANUARY 2006
From the WMDC Press and
Communications Office
About
200 people attended an Urban Renaissance Towns Team meeting to hear about
the future of the Prince of Wales Colliery site.
UK
COAL and specialist urban designers and town planners Spawforth Associates
presented an initial development concept for the site that included a
mixture of housing, leisure and business use.
The
importance of the site's location in relation to the historic town centre of
Pontefract, the castle and the racecourse was emphasised along with the
Urban Renaissance vision of developing the town's potential for being
attractive to visitors.
The
site would be developed sympathetically in a quality urban, rather than
suburban, style with particular regard to the design, materials and
landscaping which would be a major feature.
Leader
of Wakefield Council, Councillor Peter Box, who chaired the meeting of the
Five Towns Urban Renaissance Towns Team in Pontefract, said: "There was
a lot of interest in the proposals for the Prince of Wales Colliery and
quite a few questions were asked. It was generally well received.
"This
is just the first chance to look at the proposals - there will be further
consultations and meetings."
The
re-development of the former Prince of Wales Colliery site and adjoining
land at Pontefract will be a cornerstone of the Five Towns Renaissance
vision.
Yvette
Cooper MP - who welcomed the consultation process that was taking place -
the six ward councillors and other councillors from the Five Towns were also
at the meeting on Friday.
The
meeting was informed of progress on projects identified in the Urban
Renaissance Strategic Development Framework and the future role of the Towns
Team, part of the Yorkshire Forward Renaissance Towns initiative.
The
next meeting will take place in mid-March at a venue to be arranged.
