DANCING FOR SUCCESS
27 FEBRUARY 2006
From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
A
group of young women will be presented with awards for their involvement in
the Street-life Dance Project in Featherstone on Thursday. Twenty young
women will receive the Thirty Hours Young People's Award for their
commitment to the project. It has been running since May at the Young
People's Centre at Chesney's and has involved more than 50 young people so
far.
The
latest group has already performed for the Eastern Wakefield Primary Care
Trust (EWPCT) and it is looking forward to future shows around the district.
It
is hoped the project, run in partnership between Wakefield Young People's
Service and the EWPCT, will encourage young people to take part in physical
activities to help prevent obesity which can lead to health problems.
Darrel
Robinson, Neighbourhood Youth Worker, said: "I have seen young people
develop confidence and new skills through the Street- life project which I
am sure they will benefit from in the future. It was originally an activity
on offer at the youth club but its success has meant it could stand alone on
a separate night where a youth worker is on hand for support."
Chris
Wathen, EWPCT Physical Activities Coordinator, said: "This has been an
excellent partnership and has benefited lots of young people by engaging
them in physical activities through dance."
There
is now an extra dance session with Dance Leaders Award students. Young
people from Knottingley, Normanton and Featherstone are attending sessions
at Chesney's, which look at leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
