MINI MUSEUMS AT
WAKEFIELD'S LIBRARIES
28 FEBRUARY 2006

From the WMDC Press and Communications Office

Visitors to some of the district's libraries can enjoy a new season of Mini Museum displays from Wednesday March 1.

At Airedale library visitors can enjoy Home Sweet Home, a locally made 1940s style dolls house - there are also free related activities for the under 5s.

A 100-year-old handmade wooden Noah's Ark will be at Kinsley library and visitors can have fun spotting the animals queuing up two by two. There are also activities aimed at younger visitors.

At Featherstone a new display of objects associated with rites of passage will be launched. A silver christening spoon, lucky horseshoes and jet mourning jewellery will help tell the story of birth, marriage and death in Britain from the 1800s to the present day. English students from all over the world have given insights into traditions from their own cultures.

Whether fashion-conscious or just plain curious, visitors to Knottingley library can see how local people used to step out in style in Best Foot Forward, a display of shoes from Roman sandals to 1970s platforms.

Write On at Normanton shows how events have been recorded in different cultures and at different times. Exhibits include an Egyptian grave figure, a fragment of a Roman wax writing tablet excavated in Castleford and some quill pens.

Havercroft library has a new display called A Carbolic Collection - a local collection of sculpted soaps from animals to cars and cartoon characters including the Muppets, Noddy and the Flintstones.

Mini Museums is a project designed to get some of Wakefield's museum collections into community venues. Outreach Curator Erica Ramsay said: "All the Mini Museum exhibitions have objects to stir people's curiosity and imagination. They provide a great opportunity for people living in these towns and villages to see some of the objects that we're not often able to show, and also to get involved with activities to do with local history."

The Mini Museum project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Wakefield Council and SureStart.
