WAKEFIELD TO HOST
WORLD CHAMPS QUALIFIERS
BRITISH TRIATHLON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
31 JANUARY 2006
From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
Some
of the country's best triathletes will be in Wakefield to take part in the British Triathlon National Championships in the summer.
Pugneys
Country Park will form a picturesque setting for The Wakefield Triathlon,
which will also see athletes challenging for a place in the Great Britain
Triathlon Team for the ITU World Age Group Championships later in the year staged in
Lausanne, Switzerland.
The
race, on Sunday 2 July, includes a 1500 metre swim in the lake, followed by
a 40 kilometre bike ride and a 10 kilometre run.
The
event is organised by Tri-Society and Wakefield Council and has been
confirmed as the British Triathlon National Age Group Championships.
Keen
athletes who want to give the sport a try are also welcome, as are team
groups who can split the workload taking one discipline each.
Pugneys
will also host a training and warm up event on the day before the big race,
with sports exhibition stands and a pasta party to put everybody in the
mood.
Iain
Hamilton, Managing Director of Tri Society, said: "This is a great
opportunity for all involved to ensure that these National Championships
will be one of the best events of 2006. We are expecting to have over 1000
competitors racing on what can be described as a true triathlon course. The
venue, Pugneys Country Park, has previously held the British Triathlon
National Championships in the early 1990's and we look forward to staging
further major events in the future."
Deputy
Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Sport Councillor Brian Holmes added:
"Pugneys is perfect for triathlon - both for competitors and
spectators. The swim and run course are both easy to view and we are hoping
that the experienced athletes will be joined by keen locals trying out an
exciting new sport."
Jem
Lawson, Vice Chair of British Triathlon and Chair of the Events Committee
said: "We are delighted with the partnerships which are coming together
to promote the championships at Pugneys. We anticipate that the planning and
execution of the event will ensure a wonderful showcase for one of the
highest profile events in the British triathlon calendar."
Competitors
wishing to register their interest in the event should visit
www.tri-society.co.uk and send an email via the link. Entry forms will be
sent out to all those registering their interest immediately.
