GIRL GUIDES SUPPORT
WAKEFIELD IN BLOOM

A flower bed sporting the design of the Girl Guiding badge is the latest development in the Wakefield in Bloom initiative.

The flower bed marks the 90th anniversary of girl guiding in Wakefield and will be planted in Thornes Park.

Hanging baskets, floral displays, street dressing and environmental improvements are to be made by Wakefield Council as part of the new Wakefield in Bloom campaign launched last month.

It is already attracting support from community groups and businesses and now representatives from Wakefield's Rainbows, Brownies and Girl Guides have joined in the fun.

The girls visited Thornes Park recently where they planted seedlings with help from Neighbourhood Environment Team Leader Mick Duffield, who designed the flower bed. The seedlings will be planted in the park, at the junction of Thornes Road and Denby Dale Road, early in June.

Alison Hartley, Brown Owl, said: "Girl Guiding has been doing good work around Wakefield for a long time and in this, our 90th anniversary year, we are pleased to support the Wakefield in Bloom project. We are delighted by the design created for us in the style of the guide badge."

In 1916 the Girl Guides' first local company - 1st Wakefield - was registered. Membership information can be obtained by contacting brownowl19@aol.com

Rob Matley, Wakefield Council's Service Manager Urban Centres Management and Economic Development, said: "We welcome the Guides' support of Wakefield in Bloom and would encourage people to watch out for this specially designed flower bed. It is a wonderful way of celebrating both the Guides' 90th anniversary and the Wakefield in Bloom initiative.

"We would be delighted to hear from any residents, businesses and community groups who want to take part in Wakefield in Bloom to help make our district even more beautiful."
