A blind Wakefield man, who has never allowed his disability to stop him from learning, or from teaching others - has won an award sponsored by Wakefield Council.
The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, NIACE, which backs Adult Learners' Week, has recognised Alan in their annual awards with a cheque for £100 sponsored by Wakefield Council.
NIACE awards recognise individuals and groups who have benefited from learning, often overcoming barriers on the way. They also highlight programmes and projects, which have widened public participation
Despite being blind, Alan has made himself an expert on software available for visually impaired people. He works as a volunteer tutor at Drury Lane Library and helps other visually impaired people learn to use the talking computer.
Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture Denise Jeffery said:" We're delighted to be able to sponsor this award to Alan. He has overcome significant obstacles both to learn and help others and is a well-deserved award winner."
Alan will be presented at the Adult Learners' Week Regional Awards ceremony at Wakefield Town on Wednesday May 24 at 7.30pm.
