Volunteers have been stepping up to become walk leaders as part of a campaign to promote healthy transport.
More than 700 walks were organised by Wakefield Council's Healthy Transport Team in 2005, the majority of which were led by volunteers.
Last year the team encouraged more than 80 people to become Volunteer Walk Leaders and it now holds a database of 800 walkers.
Cllr Phil Dobson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "We are delighted with the success of this scheme. As well as contributing to fitness levels, walking is also better for the environment. The Healthy Transport team would like to extend a special thanks to all its volunteers and urge them to keep up all the hard work."
The Healthy Transport Team works under the same roof as the Council's Travel Awareness Team together with a member of staff who is funded by the NHS.
The team is about to launch a new initiative using a special pad in the same format as a prescription that recommends 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week to "patients". They hope health professionals at surgeries across the district will take up the idea.
