Wakefield's golf clubs are working to take golf to the wider community with a coaching programme.
Whitwood Golf Club and Wakefield City Golf Club are helping the Council achieve its vision for sport in the District and working towards the government's strategy for sport - 'A sporting future for all'.
The Council's Sport and Recreation Service, the Golf Foundation and school sports coordinators are planning to introduce golf to schools through the Tri Golf programme for seven to 11-year-olds and partnership work is already underway to work with disadvantaged young people.
Wakefield City and Whitwood golf clubs are developing their junior sections and have seen a 50% increase in juniors playing at the clubs in the last twelve months.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Sport Cllr Denise Jeffery said: "Encouraging young people to take part in sport is extremely important to help keep them healthy and active. It is tremendous to see the golf clubs getting involved and organising junior coaching courses.
"The success of increasing juniors playing at the clubs is due to the hard work and support of club members, golf development officer John Knight, golf professional Dave Bagg and his team, Jon Francis, Simon Coumbe, and Chris Nichol, who run the courses."
The junior coaching courses are every Saturday and Sunday morning.
Wakefield Golf Club is also running free golf coaching sessions for adults on Saturday June 24. This has been subsidised by grant funding and contributions from the club.
Junior members at Wakefield Golf Club can now enjoy the new electric buggies that were introduced by Dave Bagg.
He said: "This is the first time in the history of the club that buggies have been available. We endeavour to improve the services and access to the club for members and non-members alike. "
