PUSHING FOR HEALTH

Parents and carers with children in pushchairs are being encouraged to take part in a series of healthy walks this June.

Sure Start and Wakefield Council's Healthy Transport Team have organised three pram push walks in a bid to promote physical exercise amongst families and young children.

The Healthy Transport team organised more than 700 healthy walks last year. The pram push scheme is its latest initiative aimed at improving health and fitness across the District.

Councillor Phil Dobson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: "The recent reports on childhood obesity in the UK show just how important it is to start children off on the right path as early as possible. The pram push scheme is a great opportunity for parents and carers to meet and improve their health while also encouraging their children's learning in a safe and organised setting."

All three walks will last approximately 15 minutes and walkers will be given a free healthy snack after the walk.

The walk on Monday 12 June will start at the St Swithun's Community Centre in Eastmoor, meeting at 11.30am and leaving at 11.45am. The walk on Wednesday 14 June will start at Lightwaves Leisure Centre, Lower York Street, Wakefield, meeting outside Lightwaves at 1pm and leaving at 1.15pm. And the walk on 15 June will be start at the Castle Children's Centre, 255 Barnsley Road, Sandal, meeting at 9.45am and leaving at 10am.

The Healthy Transport Team works under the same roof as the Council's Travel Awareness Team together with a member of staff who is funded by the NHS.
