DOG WARDENS HELP IN FEATHERSTONE

Dog owners are being offered free microchips for their pets by Wakefield Council.

Wakefield's Dog Warden Service is holding a free event in Featherstone where the public can get their dogs microchipped.

Microchips are a popular and permanent form of identification which does not accidentally slip off dogs like the traditional collar and tag.

A microchip is implanted under the dog's skin between the shoulder blades. It is linked to a national register with the owner's contact details.

When they come across a lost dog, dog wardens, vets and the RSPCA check for the microchip.

They have scanning equipment to 'read' the information from it to quickly identify the owner. A collar and identification is still required to be worn by law.

There will also be free dog neutering vouchers available for residents who live in the Featherstone, Streethouse and Sharlston areas who can bring proof of their address.

Neutering vouchers will also be available for members of the public who do not live in the specified areas at a reduced fee of £25.

Both types of vouchers are provided by the Dogs Trust which supports the Dog Warden's chipping days.

Advice and information will also be available on all dog-related issues.

Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr Graham Isherwood said: "The feedback we get on the services provided by the Dog Wardens in the Wakefield District is very positive and we are delighted to be able to offer our services to the people in the Featherstone area for free. Microchipping dogs is a great way of ensuring that if your dog gets lost we can return it to its rightful home. We hope that as many local residents as possible turn up and benefit from the free help, support and advice that is on offer."

The event will take place in Featherstone Housing Office Car Park, Wakefield Road, Featherstone on Thursday, June 22 between 10am - 6pm.
