BEST TOWN TEAM

A team responsible for developing the five towns has been voted the best Town Team for 2006.

The Five Towns Urban Renaissance Town Team won the accolade at the Insider Yorkshire Renaissance Awards 2006. The awards are about recognising best practice in regeneration.

And the Castleford Project was runner up for the Creative Land Development award

Wakefield Council Leader Councillor Peter Box, who chairs the Urban Renaissance Towns Team, said: "This is a real achievement and I am delighted the Town Team has been recognised for its hard work and teamwork. They play a valuable role in bringing forward the 25-year vision and strategy which includes exciting prospects for development of the Five Towns. The team has worked well with the local community on how they think the Five Towns will be best developed and has gone from strength to strength since it was established in 2003."

The Town Team Award is to recognise groups specifically set up to regenerate a local community. The judges felt the Five Towns' Team achieved the most in turning a town around and involving the local community.

The awards are about recognising best practice in regeneration. Teams had to prove what they had already achieved and what they are hoping to achieve.
